📖 Verse Of The Day

🧠 Devotion

When people think about the Old Testament, many see it as a book of laws, stories, and history. But Jesus taught something very different. In Luke chapter twenty four, after His resurrection, Jesus walked with two disciples on the road to Emmaus. Verse twenty seven says, “Beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning Himself.” Jesus was not reading a few verses. He was showing them that the entire Old Testament pointed to Him.

The New Testament confirms this again in John chapter five. Jesus said, “The Scriptures… testify about Me.” He was teaching that the Old Testament foreshadowed Him long before He came to earth.

This is seen in many ways. The Old Testament is filled with “types” and “shadows,” meaning people, events, objects, and rituals that prepare the way for Jesus. These are not accidents. They are patterns God placed in Scripture to reveal who the Messiah would be.

For example, Adam is called “a type of the One to come” in Romans chapter five. Through Adam came death, and through Jesus came life. Noah points forward to Christ as the One who saves people from judgment. Melchizedek, the priest and king in Genesis, foreshadows Jesus as our eternal High Priest. Isaac being offered by Abraham in Genesis chapter twenty two foreshadows the Father giving His Son. The Passover lamb in Exodus points to Jesus as the Lamb of God. The manna in the wilderness foreshadows Jesus as the Bread of Life. The rock that produced water points to Jesus who gives living water.

The entire sacrificial system in Leviticus points to the ultimate sacrifice Jesus would make. The Day of Atonement foreshadows His work on the cross. The tabernacle in Exodus, with every piece of furniture and every ritual, reveals something about Jesus. Boaz the kinsman-redeemer in Ruth points to Christ redeeming His people. David as king foreshadows Jesus as the greater King. Jonah being three days in the fish foreshadows Jesus being three days in the tomb

These examples are only a small part of the full picture. Most biblical scholars agree there are around four hundred to five hundred foreshadowings of Jesus in the Old Testament. This includes people, symbols, offerings, feasts, laws, events, and patterns. God wrote the entire Old Testament in a way that prepares the world for His Son.

The point of all this is simple. Jesus is not a last-minute addition to the Bible. He is the center of the story. The Old Testament points forward to Him, the Gospels reveal Him, the Epistles explain Him, and Revelation praises Him.

Genesis begins with a promise. Revelation ends with His return. And everything in between points to the Savior God promised from the start.

The Bible has one message. Jesus is the One God planned, prepared, and promised from the beginning.
